Venetian Villa Day 2026: "The Taming of the Shrew" Takes the Stage at Thiene Castle
On October 17 and 18, 2026, Venetian Villa Day (Giornata delle Ville Venete) returns for its annual autumn weekend. Historic estates across Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia open their doors to offer immersive, hands-on experiences rather than traditional sightseeing. Thiene Castle, a recurring highlight of the event, joins the celebration with a unique performance: William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, presented as an interactive walking theater experience through the castle's historic rooms.
What Is Venetian Villa Day?
Organized by the Venetian Villas Association (APS) alongside the Regional Institute for Venetian Villas (IRVV), Venetian Villa Day promotes regional cultural heritage through experiential tourism. Celebrating its 5th edition in 2026, the weekend features over 75 participating villas and more than 130 bookable activities across two days. Sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Culture, ENIT, and the Veneto Region, the event is highlighted by official media partners Rai Veneto and Rai FVG.
At the heart of the initiative is the concept of the villa as a "living home"—a place where history, daily life, and traditions endure. Beyond standard guided tours, visitors can enjoy meetings with estate owners, historical reenactments, family workshops, food and wine tastings, and outdoor wellness activities. Experiences are categorized into six distinct thematic tracks (Heritage, Green, Family, Wine & Food, Dream, and Wellbeing), with the 2026 edition putting extra emphasis on the surrounding landscapes. Visitors are invited to become active participants rather than passive spectators.
Thiene Castle: A Living Home Before Palladio

Built in the 15th century—predating the classic Venetian villa architecture codified by Andrea Palladio—Thiene Castle serves as a cornerstone of regional architectural history. Combining the defensive strength of a Gothic castle with the comfort of a noble residence, it served as both a family home and a commercial hub where private life, diplomacy, and trade coexisted.
This rich heritage makes the castle an ideal backdrop for Venetian Villa Day. On October 17, visitors will step directly into Shakespeare's world. With The Taming of the Shrew, the castle rooms transform into a dynamic stage. Instead of sitting in an auditorium, the audience follows the actors from room to room through the very spaces where such historic tales were lived.
"The Taming of the Shrew": Shakespeare Room by Room
Brought to life by L'Archibugio Compagnia Teatrale—renowned for their meticulous historical theater productions—this traveling performance makes its official premiere at Thiene Castle.
Set in late 16th-century Padua, the comedy follows the household of the widow Minola, whose younger daughter Bianca is pursued by eager suitors. However, Bianca cannot marry until her fiery elder sister, Katherine—Padua's most feared shrew—is wed. When Petruchio, a witty adventurer from Verona, arrives in search of fortune, one of Shakespeare's most iconic and chaotic courtships begins.
Directed and adapted by Giovanni Florio, this lively production delivers high comedy and historical charm, blending Shakespeare's reimagined Padua with the elegant atmosphere of authentic Venetian heritage.
